Photo x Fine Art

AP photographer Mannie Garcia takes a photo of Obama on the campaign trail. Artist Shepard Fairey turns the image into a poster, and gets the pants sued off of him by AP. Then Garcia says he has the rights to the image, not AP, but that he's happy the photo was turned into the poster.

Writes Steven Heller (of the Daily Heller) on the Garcia/Fairey/AP thing:
...I do want to point out that this is not the first time photographs (and other artworks) have been the raw material for graphic works. In fact, the already murky area called "fair use," which Fairey's lawyers are invoking, has been applied before. [Here] are a few that have passed that very test. (Che by Alberto Korda and Paul Davis; Nixon official photo and Andy Warhol; Mao official portrait and Andy Warhol; News photo of Sacco and Vanzetti and Ben Shahn; Michelangelo's Isaiah and Norman Rockwell's Rosie the Riveter.)

Air Zoom Toki Lux

“Retaining distinct characteristics of the Lux series – a basic, wearable color palette built with premium materials – the Zoom Toki Lux was inspired by the Nike Zoom Sabaku and the Nike Blazer. Nike designers chose a supple perforated upper with a tonal Swoosh elegantly and subtly blended in to the layout. The signature features of the Lux series are applied to the Nike Zoom Toki with a vividly accented Sail Blue midsole, the woven “Lux” label on the heel, and a single eyelet stamped with a Lux callout. Subtle sophistication.

The Nike Zoom Toki Lux is offered in two colors – Black and Gum Medium Brown. The third colorway, Blur, will only be available at Nike Sportswear at 21 Mercer Street in New York City.”

Hate Me Now

Ride The Lakai-tning

When we shot that short film with Spike Jonze and the GIRL crew I got to meet a couple of the guys who happened to be childhood heroes of mine. Mike Carroll was one of those guys, and he told me he was gonna hook me up with some product...

So my doorbell rings, and see the UPS guy with this box with Podium tape all over it. And I'm thinking, "Oooohhhhh Shhh!!!!ttt". Some skaters will wait their whole lives and never get 1 of these boxes in the mail. A childhood dream realized...

So, I cracked that boy open and it was all Samples in there... YES!!!

Mr. Nesbitt Grooming Kit

Lovely Package turns us onto this excellent grooming kit from Mister Nesbitt. It’s got all the tools you’ll need for a “lovely” lather and shave. The kit was designed by Anwar Park. ““An emotional branding project for packaging design. I had to develop primary, and secondary packaging, as well as a gift set to house it all, for a fragrance modeled after someone close to me. I chose my father for the project, so I developed a traditional grooming kit. I designed and made all of the packaging, upholstering it with nue-buck leather and suede. I wanted to design something that was traditional and nostalgic…”

Re-sealable Drink Can

Ukrainian inventor Johan De Broyer has conceived the idea for a re-sealable aluminum soda can featuring hidden advertising messaging. The idea was developed/designed by Robert Davis, Davis Advertising Inc. of Atlanta, USA.

The ingenious new Soda Seal can appears like a standard soda can -- until it is popped open. When the tab is turned the can becomes re-sealed with a water-tight and gas-tight seal, revealing full-color, high-resolution advertising messaging. The potential for the new soda can is proportionate to the 250 billion soda cans consumed annually.

Transparent Pool Table

As part of his senior year ID project, Australian Craig Nottage designed a transparent billiards table; now he's founded his own company in Adelaide, Nottage Design, and made the table a reality. A special combination of glass and resin provide the same resistance you'd get with felt, but are completely transparent; the tubing of the slick ball-return mechanisms are also exposed. At AUS $40,000 it ain't cheap, but it's nice to see someone turn a senior project into a reality--and build a company around it.

Kanye x Spike Jonze x GIRL Skateboards

Eric Koston, Yeezy, Spike Jonze, Rickk Howard and Mike Carroll...
5 living legends.

Kanye and Spike Jonze shot a short film a couple weeks ago and Spike had the the guys from GIRL Skateboards come down to the set. They were in the "Benjamins Remix" video as extras, but this time they actually played real parts in the film. Spike even put me on the spot and I had to actually "act" in the film. So my acting debut is in a film that's directed by Spike Jonze, starring Kanye and the GIRL Skateboards crew!!! It's the best of 3 worlds and a dream come true for me!!!

Me and Froston on set

The team signed my Final Flare Deluxe Edition DVD for me...
