BAPE Store: Shibuya

Spike Jonze

We hung out with legendary, Academy Award-nominated director and producer Spike Jonze@ a birthday party he threw...

He's shooting a film of his "Magic" tricks with "Capote" director Bennett Miller. Kanye was Spike's assistant in this scene.

Watching Spike's first movie "Rubbish Heap" @ home on my projector.
I used to watch this movie every single day when I was 12 years old.

Here are some stills from his new film "Where the Wild Things Are"

Sidebar: Spike also co-directed Kanye's video "Flashing Lights"
I still don't see how this video went over sooooo many people's heads.
"Who would've ever thought that she would take it this far", then she kills him. I think that's pretty self-explanatory, "but what do i know?"

Part of the exhibit resembled a counterfeit market, but these are all real, unreleased LV bags. There were a lot of security guards around making sure that u didn't touch the bags (that's why my hands are in my pockets). COMMES des Garcons x H&M

/

Rei Kawakubo, founder and head designer of Japanese label, Comme des Garcons, will be the guest designer for H&M's 2008 autumn collection. The collection will include everything from men's, women's, and children's clothing to accessories and even an exclusive unisex fragrance. The collection is set to launch in early November at the opening of H&M's second store in Tokyo, Japan, and it will hit other H&M stores a few days later.

Ever since Comme des Garcons' debut in 1981, Rei Kawakubo has been known for challenging the norms with her use of distressed fabrics, unfinished edges, asymmetrical cuts, and monochromatic tones. The collaboration will let H&M break into the Japanese/Harajuku market and compete with the dominating Uniqlo, both known for fashionable yet affordable clothing.

This collaboration will definitely be worth waiting for since it will be Comme des Garcon design at H&M prices.

The First Black Supermodel: Donyale Luna

/

Donyale Luna (1945-1979) was the first black supermodel, cover girl and the first model of ethnic origin to appear on Vogue, appearing on the March 1966 issue.
/

Born Peggy Anne Freeman on Jan. 1, 1945, Luna was described by a relative as “a very weird child, even from birth, living in a wonderland, a dream.” Her mother wanted her to be a nurse, but after being discovered by British fashion photographer David McCabe, Luna became the first black woman to be featured on a U.S. fashion magazine: the January 1965 issue of Harper’s Bazaar.

According to her birth certificate, Luna was born to Peggy and Nathaniel Freeman, but she insisted her biological father’s last name was Luna and her mother was Mexican. Her reportedly abusive father was murdered when she was 18 and after meeting McCabe, she moved to New York City. Described as having “the tall strength and pride movement of a Masai warrior”, Luna was under exclusive contract to famed photographer Richard Avedon.
/

Time Magazine published “The Luna Year” in 1966 following the Vogue cover. The article revealed that Luna’s mother was against her move to New York. “She told me, ‘He’s trying to get you to New York to make a bad girl of you.’” It also detailed her toll instant success took on her: “A month after hitting New York, she married a young actor, divorced him after ten months and now will not even give his name.”

“I love New York,” she said. “But there were bad things. People were on drugs or hung up on pot. There was homosexuality and lesbianism and people who liked to hurt.”

“For reasons of racial prejudice and the economics of the fashion business,” said Avedon in the April 1975 issue of Playboy (for which Luna also posed), “I was never permitted to photograph her for publication again.” Luna then fled to Europe.

She was happier there, filling her days with work & eating and her nights with discothèques. The 6′2″ model also appeared in several movies. One critic described Luna as “pure diva, presenting a delicious mobile excess of mannerism”dluna.jpg Her success, however, could not shield her from her problem with her heritage. In “Luna, Who Dreamed of Being Snow White,” Judy Stone described her as:

“secretive, mysterious, contradictory, evasive, mercurial and insistent upon her multiracial lineage — exotic, chameleon strands of Mexican, American Indian, Chinese, Irish, and, last but least escapable, Negro.”

Media interest in her racial heritage caused her enormous discomfort. When asked whether her appearances in Hollywood films would benefit the cause of black actresses, Luna replied, “If it brings about more jobs for Mexicans, Chinese, Indians, Negroes, groovy. It could be good, it could be bad. I couldn’t care less.”

During an interview in the late ’60s, Luna expressed her fondness for LSD:

“I think it’s great. I learned that I like to live, I like to make love, I really do love somebody, I love flowers, I love the sky, I like bright colors, I like animals. [LSD] also showed me unhappy things — that I was stubborn, selfish, unreasonable, mean, that I hurt other people.”

Around 1976, Luna had a daughter, Dream, with Luigi Cazzaniga, who shot her Playboy pictorial.

Her unprofessional behavior, though, signaled the end of Luna’s career. Beverly Johnson recalled that Luna “[didn’t] wear shoes winter or summer. Ask her where she’s from — Mars? She went up and down the runways on her hands and knees. She didn’t show up for bookings. She didn’t have a hard time, she made it hard for herself.” In 1979, Luna died of a drug overdose in Rome.

Ellis G: Shadow Art

I'll be doing this@ night while I'm skating...

Follow the Rules: By A.P.C. designer Jean Touitou

/

1.
We’re not living in a very creative era. That’s not good or bad; it’s just the way it is. I think it’s in very bad taste to buy art right now. People should leave it to the hedge-fund owners who want to satisfy their wives. “Hey, I bought a Chinese avant-garde thing.” Good for you.

2.
I think it’s very important to look sexy at home. I hate it when people say, “I will take this to the countryside because it’s not fashionable anymore.” I love being well-dressed when nobody’s looking at me.

3.
At hotels, they always mess up the cleaning. They will do a crease when it’s not necessary. You give them a cotton shirt and they dry-clean it. It smells funny, so you have to rinse it again. So I travel light.

4.
If you can tell a man’s sexuality by the way he dresses—like a “gay” uniform or a “macho” uniform—that’s disgusting.

5.
Nowadays, people work out way too much, and they look like invaders from another planet. A guy who works out two hours a day—focusing on his chest because he thinks it’s sexy—you can’t dress him, even if you send him to the best designer or stylist in the world.

6.
Finance men have money but no taste. They’ll say, “My wife thinks this tie looks good on me.” They don’t focus on what’s beautiful and what’s not beautiful—they leave it to women.

7.
The rock star who uses a personal stylist to dress him should go to jail. If you’re doing rock and roll, you should know how to dress. You shouldn’t need to hire anybody.

8.
Anybody can be a good guest for dinner. When it gets delicate is after one day. The worst guests are the people who come to your place and in the morning they say, “Okay, what do we do today?”

9.
I once wore a pink, ruffled shirt for dinner, and I wish I had never done it. I thought it was funny, but I felt so bad in it I realized I don’t have the humor to deal with ugliness.

10.
After you’re 35, it’s difficult to drink unless you’re running 10 miles a day. I’m not talking one dry martini every Saturday or something. I’m talking three dry martinis a night. And I don’t think that’s possible—it’s too much poisoning. It’s not a very sexy way to talk about drinking, but that’s the truth.

Multi-color Checkered Vans

Fully..... Waved?

This video is AMAZING!!! Justice "DVNO"

It's all reworked, classic television graphics from old programs and networks

Mike Carroll Select EMB LTD

Hard to believe the heyday of EMB, a spot synonymous with the progression of modern street skating, was over 15 years ago. This shoe, a tribute to Mike Carroll's formative years at this infamous spot, is a true piece of skateboarding nostalgia. But what really makes this pack special is the FREE 18-minute DVD that comes with each pair. Filmed and edited by Jacob Rosenburg, it features never before seen footage of Mike from that era as well as commentary by both Jake and Mike for all sections. The DVD alone is worth the price of the shoes, so it's pretty much impossible to go wrong with this one. A must have for any true skate collector.
